Description
This presentation explores aviation as a case study in contemporary sustainability governance. Focusing on the decarbonization of a hard-to-abate and highly internationalized sector, it examines how scientific knowledge, international diplomacy, regulation, market mechanisms, and industrial policy interact to shape the transition toward sustainable aviation. The lecture analyses the role of actors such as ICAO, the European Union, states, industry, and standard-setting bodies, while discussing key governance instruments including emissions trading systems, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandates, certification schemes, MRV systems, sustainability disclosures, and lifecycle assessment methodologies. Particular attention is given to unresolved challenges such as non-CO₂ effects, biodiversity impacts, land-use change, greenwashing, global fragmentation, and the tensions between harmonization, competitiveness, innovation, and climate ambition.
